More efficient Electric motors get required EU-wide.

With the eco-design directive the switches for the legal establishment of efficent, sustainable and resource saving devices inside of the european economic zone will placed.

The commission published the eco-design frame directive because of the continuous raising needs of commodity and energy and the consequences on the environment and the society.

In the first version 2005 the directive target only on the efficiency increase of all „energy-using products“ (TV, radiator, lightning)

In 2009 Products which are pertinent for energy use were added and furthermore products which influence the energy.

Windows, doors, ground pad and other insulating materials like taps or cleaning material will be treated from separate regulations in future and so they should complement the therm eco-design completely.

The starting button was pressed.

Electric motors which are produced or imported since 16.6.2011, have to comply with the regulation 640/2009 / EC!

Eco-design for so many different products?

By „preliminary studies“ products would be considered on trade volume and environmental effects. Therefore it was considered, if there is potential for improvement, without an expense of high cost.

The whole lifecycle of a product get considered.

Not all studies reveal, that it is usefull to develop measures. If it is usefull, measures for the implementation for the single products will be fixed (Single directive)

Eco-design for electromotor

The regulation 64072009/EC manages t he requirements concerning on the ecodesign of electromotors. About 70% of the electricity consumption of industry cancelled on systems for drive, in which are motors introduced.

The efficiency could raised up 20 – 30, after guesses of the EU-commission

Which products get captured?

  • single-speed three-phase 50 Hz or 50/60 Hz squirrel-cage induction motors
  • 2-, 4- or 6-pin
  • Rated voltage up to 1000 V
  • power range 0.75 kW to 375 kW
  • Designed for continuous operation

To consider is that motors could fall in the scope of the regulation, if they are implemented in an other products.

The „CE“ for the environment -
not for the bulbs.

What does this means for engineering?

  • Motors have a specific energy efficiency class (IE 2 from 16.6. For motors from 0.75 kW to 375 kW) correspond
(The exact minimum efficiencies are listed in Annex I to that Directive.)

the information of the product get extensive (technical documentation, nameplate)

  • The accordance of the electromotos with the requirements of eco-design directive will be confirmed with the „CE-sign“ – these will be pertinent for machine builders at the area „technicial purchase“ and by drafting of contracts.

Keep in view

Further measures for implementation are EU-wide in design. There is actually a regulation for Glandless circulation pumps and measures for Machine tools, industrial furnaces, transformers, heaters etc,are in design the future has to be observed, so that your product suddenly not become illegal- quasi like the bulbs.
