A management system is instrument for specific implementation of business stragegies:
Including: - Planning of operational sequences,
- accomplishment of these sequences concerning planning,
- control of sucess - and if possible -
- the correction, if the desired result will not be reached.
"plan - do - check - act" is called the PDCA-cycle. This cycle begins with an analysis of the actual state (inventory). Therefore we can also speak about A-PDCA (A for analysis).
This cycle is found in all specifications for management systems (not always with this name). |

Continuous improvement and description:If you've been running through this cycle and you've hit your targets, you will get into the planning phase again. This cycle recures constantly and causes a continous improvement - a basic requirement of all nominated management systems - and naturally the operational reality: Who stops, falls back! There are always specifications for documentations in the requirements, it contains a description of operational structure (company structure, functions and responsibilities) and organisational structure (business processes). Obligation and traceability should be ensured.
From PDCA to the management system PDCA-cycle, continuing improvement and description together are formal signs for all management systems. The requirements of the content additionally refer to different operational aspects e.g.: Due to these aspects we talk about quality, environment, work safety and security management. On one hand such specific management systems focus the attention on the accordant topics. On the other hand there's the danger to accomplish operations twice and triple or oppositional, isolated of each other.
 Therefore the tedency goes to integrated management systems, which bring the different topics together.
Requirements for the single aspects of the mangement systems will be worked out in management standards, which are the basis for a combined understanding and for external certifications.
Use of the PDCA-cycle
The PDCA-cycle is used for all relevant operational activities and also for the management system. There's not only one PDCA-cycle, there are numerous of them:
